Whirinaki Whare Taonga is a fantastic arts centre just 30 minutes drive from Wellington.

The complex includes a 200-seat theatrical performance venue, Gillies Group Theatre, the public art gallery for the city, Mitre 10 MEGA Create and Golden Homes Galleries, the civic hall event and recreation venue, The Professionals Recreation Hall, and licensed cafe and caterer Dough Bakery. Fantastic public programme available.

ACCESSIBILITY

General

When booking your tickets for a show or event at Whirinaki Whare Taonga please advise of any special requirements you may have. They offer a wheelchair for public use in the art galleries and theatre, please advise a staff member should you require to use it. Wheelchair Seating in the Gillies Group Theatre. Two seats available with wheelchair access, these must be requested when making your booking. A lift is available between the ground floor foyer and Gillies Group Theatre which his located on level two.

Parking

The closest accessible carparks are located 50 metres along Fergusson Drive in front of the library. Further accessible carparks are available in the main rear carpark in front of the aquatic centre. At this stage there is a curb to be navigated at the drop off bay in front of the Council administration building 20 metres from Whirinaki Whare Taonga's front entrance.

Rongoā Māori

A series of practical workshops for Rongoā Māori - Traditional Māori Medicine. Workshops are taught in the bush in a supportive and encouraging environment for both Māori and non-Māori participants. All workshops are run over a weekend and are held in the ngahere (forest). The aim is to teach people how to identify the plants used for rongoā, where to find them, and how to collect them and the tikanga (customs) that must be followed.
