Whether you are a student of Classics, have an interest in ancient cultures, or are just looking fun family-friendly activities in Christchurch, there is something here for everyone in this very small (one room) but interesting and very carefully curated museum.

There is lots to see at the Arts Centre and it’s close to the Botanic Gardens, Art Gallery and Christchurch Museum so this is a lovely free extra. The UC Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities is home to the amazing James Logie Memorial Collection of artefacts from Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Near Eastern cultures. The Logie Collection is one of the University of Canterbury’s great treasures, and contains some of the finest classical antiquities in New Zealand. The Teece is family friendly, with activities for all ages to enjoy. Entry is free, donations welcomed.

ACCESSIBILITY

General

The Teece Museum is fully accessible for wheelchairs, visitors with mobility issues, or for families with prams. The accessibility entrance via the glass doors at 3 Hereford St. Ring the doorbell placed on the accessibility sign just to the left of the doors, and one of our helpful gallery hosts will come to assist you. All bathrooms are accessible.

Parking

There are two mobility access parks in Market Square, with no time limit. There is plenty of on street parking nearby.

Rongoā Māori

A series of practical workshops for Rongoā Māori - Traditional Māori Medicine. Workshops are taught in the bush in a supportive and encouraging environment for both Māori and non-Māori participants. All workshops are run over a weekend and are held in the ngahere (forest). The aim is to teach people how to identify the plants used for rongoā, where to find them, and how to collect them and the tikanga (customs) that must be followed.
