At nearly 10,000 square metres, Tūranga is the largest public library in the South Island and the flagship for the Christchurch City Libraries network, supporting 19 community, digital, and mobile libraries. Creative spaces, entertainment spaces and relaxing spaces.

ACCESSIBILITY

General

Christchurch City Council worked with input from Barrier Free, Be Accessible, the Disability Advisory Group (DAG), and Smile Dial to make the building as accessible as possible.

Transport

Bike stands are located on the Cathedral Square and Gloucester Street sides of Tūranga. A number of cycleways lead into the central city. Many buses stop within 350m-600m.

Parking

Four ‘P120’ mobility parking spaces immediately outside Tūranga. Two of these are on Gloucester Street and two are on Colombo Street. Metered parking spaces opposite the library on Gloucester Street, and metered on-street parks within a 5 to 10 minute walk to Tūranga. Off-street car parks are located at 192 Gloucester Street, 158 Hereford Street, and 105 Worcester Street.

Rongoā Māori

A series of practical workshops for Rongoā Māori - Traditional Māori Medicine. Workshops are taught in the bush in a supportive and encouraging environment for both Māori and non-Māori participants. All workshops are run over a weekend and are held in the ngahere (forest). The aim is to teach people how to identify the plants used for rongoā, where to find them, and how to collect them and the tikanga (customs) that must be followed.
